Next week, Sept. Petty caught up with Frontstretch to discuss his Grand Ole Opry experience, getting back to his music career, the success of Dinner Drive and the plan for the Charity Ride. But I think the coolest thing you did this year was perform at the Grand Ole Opry. How did that come about? We had our big press announcement and did a preview of Dinner Drive that week. So it was fantastic, it was amazing. I had played at the Ryman [Auditorium], and I think it had been on a Thursday night or something like that.
Petty: I was good with it, and I enjoyed it. So I had a good time. My wife Morgan was with me. Because then you get to go out on stage and do it. Petty: Oh, yeah. Hank Sr. Little Jimmy Dickens stood there. You try not to think about it, but you do think about it. I was a racecar driver. I think a lot of times in this country or a lot of places, we pigeonhole people. All he can do is play baseball. If we did that, we say that [Ernest] Hemingway was only a hunter. People can do two different things.
Do you have any future plans for that or any of those songs that you did during that? Petty: Yeah, I got a lot more than 52 songs. I can tell you that.
Give me some feedback. And I got great feedback from people. But I would like to do something with them, yes. But as third-generation driver in the Petty family, Kyle carried on the legacy of his dad, Richard, and grandfather, Lee.
During the season, Petty won the final race of his career in the very car that today sits on our museum floor. Over the course of miles around the mile-long Dover oval, Petty passed car after car, taking the lead on lap and holding it for just two laps. Petty and the number 42 Silver Bullet regained the lead on lap and held it for the next 82 laps.
Petty jockeyed with the field, specifically Bobby Labonte, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt through the second half of the race, capturing the lead three separate times before securing it for good on lap Petty ultimately won the race by. Kyle spends the day with rapper Pitbull in Miami, Florida, reminiscing over time spent in a unique car with special meaning. Pitbull offers Kyle an inside look at his SLAM Charter School and shares stories from his childhood, professional career and personal life, while enjoying some local Miami Cuban food.
