I recall reading a blue post that called the point cap a 'soft cap', which I imagine means that the cap will increase at some point in the future. Even if I'm mistaken in my reading of that, I can't imagine that the cap will remain at a level below 2x the highest priced items. It's also possible that some additional items including hopefully chaos orbs will become available at or shortly after the release of Cata.

Trading JP for level 80 gear or Primordial Saronite which is of equally little value seems pretty foolish. Even without any direct evidence that I won't be at the JP cap until lvl 85, I'd rather take the chance of bringing my points into Cata than spending them on something that'll be obsolete a couple of days into Cata or a little bit of gold.
