What type of yarn is linen




















When retting is completed, the stalks are broken down to release the fibre. It is then combed and straightened in preparation for spinning into yarn. Traditionally, linen yarns are spun using a distaff, which is a long pole that attaches to a spinning wheel to stop the fibres from tangling.

However, it is entirely possible to spin with flax without using one of these - you just have to work with small handfuls at a time.

Linen is usually spun very finely and then plied to make a thicker yarn. The yarn is then boiled to clean it and make it slightly softer and shinier. Two very different linen based yarns. My experiences with knitting linen yarn in the past have been mixed. I often found it too harsh on my hands and the resulting fabric didn't have the softness I had hoped for.

However, over the last few months, I decided to try knitting with linen again, based on the recommendations of knitters I trust and gosh! My experience now is totally different. It holds it's block really well too, due to the wool content in the yarn. Linen's high absorption rate and great strength when wet both make it a good choice for crafting a small cloth meant for household use. For the same reasons, linen yarn may be used to crochet decorative and functional beverage coasters that will quickly absorb condensation.

Traditionally, the term "linens" specifically refers to textiles that are used around the household, such as bed covers or tablecloths, and linen yarn may also be used to knit or crochet these larger household items.

The durability of linen yarn makes it a very popular choice for making knit or crocheted bags. The yarn has some really nice qualities that make it suitable for warm weather garments like summer tops and wraps.

Given all these different characteristics, which are quite the opposite from those of wool which most knitters are familiar with, knitting with linen can be a little different. Maybe even a little struggle if you try to do it exactly as you would have treated a woolen yarn. Linen fiber stick to itself, if you pull the needle out off your knitting your stitches will stand where you left them.

But, when washed a few times the fibers will become soft and drapey. Make it easy on your hands and go down a needle size or two instead. A 4 medium weight worsted aran weight linen yarn, Fibra Natura Flax is a bliss to work with. So light and smooth yet sturdy. And although your creations may seem a little rigid at first as expected of natural linen, the crunchiness softens tremendously with every spin in the washer.
